MONDAY SESSIONS
APEX & ORDS for DBAs and System Admins 2024 Update
Richard Soule, 2:10 – 3:10 PM
“Hey, can you set up APEX for me? It’s easy, all you do is install APEX and ORDS and then it’s ready to go,” says the developer to the DBAs/system admins.
Unfortunately, all too often, the answer is not yes, but instead, “But what about security?” followed by, “What about this or that, or this other thing?”
If you are a developer who wants to be able to answer the “What abouts?” or just understand how APEX and ORDS (Oracle Rest Data Services) work at a technical level, or a DBA/system admin who has never implemented APEX or ORDS, or an experienced DBA/system admin who would like to learn to implement APEX & ORDS in a more supportable and maintainable way, this session is for you.
You’ll leave with clear step-by-step instructions for:
- Providing database developers with the functionality of the APEX packages and APIs without exposing your database to browsers.
- The correct way to allow your database developers to reach out of the database to other web-based resources.
- Finally, how to install and configure ORDS middleware (especially since the latest ORDS changed implementation architecture) so that APEX applications and REST services can be served from your database.
This is a 2024 update of Kscope23’s Oracle APEX Top Speaker award-winning session with the absolute latest versions of Oracle Database, Oracle APEX and ORDS.
TUESDAY SESSIONS
Build Intelligent APEX Applications Now!
Adrian Png, 8:00 – 8:50 AM
The amazing advancements in high performance computing and wide availability of machine learning (ML) frameworks and tools have made it easier for software developers to build intelligence into their Oracle APEX applications. Through this session, learn the basics, understand the processes, and know the tools that can help you transform traditional web applications, making them smarter and improving the user experience. We will examine features provided by the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure to train and operationalize ML models, and then use them in APEX applications.
Kubernetes for the APEX-Hearted

Talk to your documents
Plamen Mushkov, 4:00 – 5:00 PM
At this point everyone is probably aware of the power of ChatGPT, Bard, Bing, Copilot and the rest of the Large Language Models out there. And while they are great at answering questions on general topics, they lack two major abilities – they don’t know your business and personal data and they don’t have a long-term memory (their context is limited at several thousand words). Overcoming these two limitation are key to adoption of more AI solution by various businesses. In my talk I will discuss the major LLMs available, compare them and show you some popular use cases. I will then show you how we can build an Oracle APEX application that allows customers to “talk” to their private documents and get insights about them. All this thanks to the Vector databases, a feature that Oracle is actively working on. You will learn how Vector stores allow us to do similarity searches on documents, text and even images and sound. A talk that hopefully be inspirational for some and trigger them elevate their business applications.
WEDNESDAY SESSIONS
Scaling Everything with APEX and AI
Plamen Mushkov with Brad Cardinal, CTO Clay Lacy Aviation, 8:00 – 8:50 AM
Having a process that takes employees hours and hours of manual work? There are certainly many such cases. But with today’s technologies, the explosion of AI and Machine Learning models, it’s easier than ever to automate processes and give people their time back for more creative work. Companies like Clay Lacy Aviation are exploring new ways to utilizing these technologies to further automate the back office and allow the company to scale revenue while controlling costs. In this session you will see what the actual benefit of this automation is, measured in man hours and money ultimately. We will do a comparison between various models on price, quality, ease of use and development effort. Join us for the full story.
Enriching Data and Applications with Semantics
Adrian Png, 10:30 – 11:20 AM
In 2015, I first spoke about applying Semantic Web concepts in Oracle APEX application. Almost a decade later, let us review how this field of technology has evolved, and why concepts like knowledge graphs, ontologies, and the SPARQL query language are still relevant today. In this session, we will examine what Oracle’s converged database offers to developers who want to enrich their data and applications with semantics. We will also discuss the value that knowledge graphs bring to the development of foundation models and our unending quest for Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).
THURSDAY SESSIONS
Fine-tune A Large Language Model For An Oracle APEX Application
Adrian Png, 10:45 AM – 12:15 PM
Large Language Models (LLMs) are machine learning models that can process and generate human language using deep neural network architectures trained on massive amounts of text data. They have been used in a wide-variety of use cases including text classification, generation, summarization, and chat applications. However, in some circumstances, it is desirable to fine-tune a LLM on private data. This workshop demonstrates how developers can perform the fine-tuning, using open source LLMs hosted on Hugging Face, on OCI Data Science, deploy the model, and then use it to perform inferencing in an Oracle APEX application.
