ODTUG Kscope16 Sessions

The Oracle APEX Community is amazing. It’s a credit to Joel Kallman and the APEX Dev Team. It’s a credit to the Oracle ACE’s and ACE Directors specializing in APEX. It’s a credit to those companies like Insum who challenge the stereotypes and demonstrate exactly what APEX is capable of. It’s a credit to every APEX developer everywhere. As President of ODTUG I worked with all of the communities, but I can tell you there’s nothing..nothing like the APEX Community. While many of us have been using APEX for years, we must remember the current popularity of the tool means that new developers are arriving daily – which is why I’ll be talking about these Kscope16 Sessions.

A quick look at the this year’s KScope16 APEX lineup and it’s clear to see there’s something for everyone. I took a stab at building a session list I feel would have particular appeal to someone looking at APEX for the first time, or someone without much experience with the tool. In addition to the expected APEX intro sessions, you’ll see a pretty wide range of topics – everything from hands-on labs, to panel discussions, to mobile development, to SQL and PL/SQL. That’s because to be that solid APEX developer, you need a solid Oracle foundation to stand on.

The list below should keep you plenty busy. Make sure to drop by the Insum booth to let me know what you think.

Oh, and you MUST plan to attend the Sunday Symposium and Thursday Deep Dive.

Developing Rapidly with Quality and Agility
Ed Jones, Oracle Corporation
When: Jun 28, 2016, Session 10, 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm
Topic: Application Express
Subtopic: Real World

We all know that APEX is a great framework for getting database-backed applications up and running rapidly. But that certainly doesn’t mean it can’t be used for long-term development projects or that software engineering best practices can’t be applied to APEX development. I will share how we persuaded a several-thousand-strong development organization to ditch Word and Excel in favor of a custom APEX application, built with an Agile mindset.

Forecasting in Oracle Using the Power of SQL
Kim Hansen, Trivadis Denmark A/S
Co-presenter(s): Brendan Tierney, Oralytics
When: Jun 28, 2016, Session 11, 3:30 pm – 4:30 pm
Topic: Database
Subtopic: SQL

When it comes to performing analytics, all we seem to hear about is that we need to use R. But what if we could do it in SQL? Can SQL perform many of the analytical tasks our organization needs? To borrow a phrase from Barack Obama, “Yes we can”. Yes, we can use SQL to perform many of the analytical techniques our business users and analysts want to perform. But the biggest challenge is how you can do it. Oracle comes with over 280 statistical and analytic functions, but many of us are only aware of a few of these. We will present a case study from a real-life scenario where R was used to perform forecasting of product sales. When using this approach, we encountered many challenges. To overcome these, we looked to using the power of SQL to perform the same task. We do so with some surprising results. Our presentation will bring you on a journey of what we did, what we discovered, and why we wanted to share our discoveries with you. Additionally, we will also discuss how you can expand the already extensive analytic capabilities of the Oracle Database by running R as part of the Oracle Database using Oracle R Enterprise.

It Wasn’t Me: Finding Bugs in APEX Applications
Peter Raganitsch, FOEX GmbH
When: Jun 28, 2016, Session 12, 4:45 pm – 5:45 pm
Topic: Application Express
Subtopic: Real World

Every programmer eventually will hit a point in developing applications when something doesn’t work as expected or when a client reports a bug or strange behavior. In this situation, it is important to be able to locate the source of the problem and find out how that influences other parts of your program. What I want to show you in this presentation are some techniques to debug your APEX applications on several levels, from the browser down to the database. Also, we are going to discuss tools for instrumentation and tools for debugging. And finally, I’ll show you how to blame others for the found bugs 😉

Instrumentation for Oracle Database Development
Alex Nuijten, allAPEX
When: Jun 29, 2016, Session 17, 3:15 pm – 4:15 pm
Topic: Database
Subtopic: PL/SQL

An often-overlooked functionality when writing Oracle Database code is instrumentation. With instrumentation it is possible to see after the production code has been executed which code path was taken and which arguments are passed along. Instrumentation is, unfortunately, not used very often and missed when an application goes into production.
Writing your own instrumentation code starts easy, but quickly extra features are requested to expand the functionality. A popular framework called Logger, actively maintained on GitHub, offers a lot of features out of the box. This session will introduce instrumentation to the delegates and show various aspects of Logger and LoggerUtil to increase the uptake of using instrumentation.

The Best Oracle Database 12c New Features
Rich Niemiec , Rolta
When: Jun 29, 2016, Session 18, 4:30 pm – 5:30 pm
Topic: Database
Subtopic: DBA

This presentation will look at which 12c tuning features should be investigated for use. Many of the tuning features that will be covered will be related to the DBA, but there will also be a few outside that realm that focus on the developer. There will be simple examples (such as a quick example using a new hint) to show the basic functionality of the new features. The speaker has been working with the beta 12c program.

1. Overview of tuning features
2. Each specific feature (such as new hints)
3. Example of using specific feature (such as new hints)
4. Other new features not discussed but worth considering
5. Summary

In a future post we’ll assemble a Kscope16 sessions list for those more experienced APEX developers….our journey continues.
