Solving Everyday Problems with the Oracle Cloud

June 26 10:30 – 11:00 AM – Summit 6
Track: Oracle APEX
Category: Extensions & Integrations

In this session, learn how you can make use of Oracle Cloud Infrastructure services and Oracle’s low-code technologies to create solutions for everyday problems. Explore how we can add Internet of Things devices to interact with the real world, and enlist the help of Machine Learning to further enhance the experience.

Sharing Sensitive Data in a Greedy World

June 26 4:15 – 5:15 PM – Summit 3
Track: Emerging Technologies, Data Sharing
Category: Approaches and Technologies

Let’s face it, Big Data is here to stay and organizations want to harvest the wealth of information that it contains. While the motivations are mostly commercial, some use cases offer inherent benefits to the true owners of the data, YOU. Think healthcare! Is there a common ground that can be established between data stewards and owners? In this session, we will look at Privacy-enhancing Technologies (PET), and how they can be used to allow organizations to “use” consumer data while not jeopardizing privacy.

Who’s Who in APEX Today!

June 28 4:30 – 5:15 PM – Summit 6
Track: Oracle APEX
Category: Lifecycle Management & Security
Co Presenter: Heli Helskyaho, CEO Miracle Finaland Oy

The list of prominent faces in the APEX community has evolved over time, and so has Identity and Access Management (IAM) technologies. In this session, we will not only revisit standard enterprise solutions like SAML and OAuth2, but also explore modern concepts like multi-factor authentication, passwordless, and Self-sovereign Identity.

The Best Crazy Idea – Give Your End Users APEX Workspaces in Production

June 26 10:30 – 11:00 AM – Aurora D
Track: Oracle APEX
Category: Lifecycle Management & Security

We, the database administrators, architects, and developers, do not own the data – the end users do. The Oracle database has a robust security model. As professional database architects we can provide fine-grain access to precisely the data that each user should be able to access. Once that data access model is in place, power end users should have the best tools available for them to access THEIR data.

This session will cover ways to make it safe and productive for your power end users to have their own workspaces, in production, to access their own data – even if that data is owned by shared user/schema.

APEX Feature Applications

June 28 10:15 – 11:15 AM – Summit 6
Track: Oracle APEX
Category: The Future of APEX

Learn how to use the new APEX Feature Apps to quickly add functionality to your applications. This session will cover several APEX Feature Apps including Comments, Notifications, and Interstitial Pages. Within one hour we will add all three features to an existing application. We will also integrate the Comments and Notifications features – a common use case.

Hold Your Horses – Start Your APEX Project the Right Way

June 26 4:15 – 5:15 PM – Aurora D
Track: Oracle APEX
Category: Core Components

We’ve all seen (and maybe even done?) them. The videos and testimonials of “full-fledged apps” in under an hour. They often impress, but most of us will agree that some of the fast-tracking and shortcuts could potentially need some rework before going to production.

In this session, we’ll cover a few basic (and not so basic!) things to take care of before diving into your development, from considering your deployment strategy, security, auditing methods, shared component management, globalization considerations, UI, and more. Slow and steady (at the start) wins the race!

How Very Meta – Leveraging Oracle APEX Views

June 28 2:00 – 3:00 PM – Summit 7
Track: Oracle APEX
Category: Core Components

Oracle APEX is metadata driven. But what does that mean? Your application definition itself is stored in a relational data model you can query through a set of views. In this session, we’ll cover some innovative ways you can use data ABOUT your application WITHIN your application to solve a variety of problems and challenges many of us face regularly.

APEX Maps Put to the Test

June 26 2:45 -3:45 PM – Summit 3
Track: Oracle APEX
Category: Core Components

In this session, you will see some interesting use cases of the APEX Maps region. I will not only share the pretty side of it, but also some limitations and problems I faced.

You will learn more about the new Vector Map tiles and Device Geolocation (available since version 22.2), which I will put to the test. You will also learn what are the different types of geographical data available for use, how to do operations on the map using the Oracle Spatial utilities packages, and determine things like nearest neighbors, points within a certain radius, calculating distances or using the Geocoded Address item.

The Customer Is Happy… And They Want More. Here Is What We Did and Why.

June 28 11:45 AM -12:45 PM – Summit 6
Track: Oracle APEX
Category: Other APEX
Co Presenter: Brad Cardinal, CTO Clay Lacy Aviation

Type: Case StudiesA holistic discussion of the platform design and development decisions that were made to build a modern customer portal for mobile and desktop in APEX.

We will focus on the strengths of APEX for this project and our decision-making process for when we deviated from standard APEX components and methods.

Getting Yourself Oriented in the Booming World of AI

June 28 2:00 – 3:00 PM – Summit 3
Track: Emerging Technologies
Category: Advanced Topics on AI and Machine Learning

OpenAI, ChatGPT, Stable Diffusion, DreamBooth, DALL-E 2, Midjourney. If these names speak something to you, that’s great! If not, you will be amazed how advanced the AI and ML models have become recently. From generating images out of text prompts, upscaling low-res photos and recovering old and damaged ones, all the way to answering any question you might have. AI is now advanced enough to translate Natural Language to SQL and even create whole stories from a short description and few keywords. Join me for lots of examples and real-world use cases.

You Know You Might Have a Bad Data Model When…

June 26 10:30 -11:00 AM – Summit 2
Track: Database Engineering & Development
Category: All About Performance (Tuning, Optimization, High Performance)

Lots of substrings in where clauses, columns ending in 2, the table with 215 columns, distincts everywhere, active Y/N columns, many self-joins, apex_string.split()… What do these things have in common? If you are building a transactional system where data integrity is essential, they are all strong indications that your data model could probably use some work. The time to fix data model mistakes is before they happen again and by calling out a Rouges’ gallery of bad practices we just might be able to avoid them in the future.

Together we’ll look at all-too-common anti-patterns that exist in many databases and some strategies for fixing the current madness and preventing future mistakes.

You’ll leave with clear step-by-step instructions for:

1) Providing database developers with the functionality of the APEX packages and APIs without exposing your database to browsers.
2) The correct way to allow your database developers to reach out of the database to other web-based resources.
3) Finally, how to install and configure ORDS middleware (especially since the latest ORDS changed implementation architecture) so that APEX applications and REST services can be served from your database.

APEX & ORDS for DBAs and System Admins

June 26 1:30 2:30 PM – Summit 3
Track: Oracle APEX
Category: Other APEX

“Hey, can you set up APEX for me? It’s easy, all you do is install APEX and ORDS and then it’s ready to go,” says the developer to the DBAs/system admins.

Unfortunately, all too often, the answer is not yes, but instead, “But what about security?” followed by, “What about this or that, or this other thing?”

If you are a developer who wants to be able to answer the “What abouts?” or just understand how APEX and ORDS (Oracle Rest Data Services) work at a technical level, or a DBA/system admin who has never implemented APEX or ORDS, or an experienced DBA/system admin who would like to learn to implement APEX & ORDS in a more supportable and maintainable way, this session is for you.
